Hashem Al Souky and his family eat lunch in their apartment in Cairo's 10th of Ramadan suburb on April 4, 2015. If Al Souky is successful in reaching Europe by boat, it will be about a year before he will be able to apply for family reunification and see his three children again.
The contents of Hashem Al Souky's backpack that he will take with him on the attempt to reach Europe by boat. Important papers including his Syrian passport, ID and army papers, a box of cheese for food and a life jacket in case the boat were to sink. His biggest fear, he says is of arrest before even making it out to sea.
